I recently had the joy of doing the NC500 with my dad, we had been planning to do this for a few years, but finally all the stars aligned and we managed to organise things, I was meant to take the car with all our stuff, with my dad taking his bike from Germany, riding to Amsterdam and taking the ferry to Newcastle.
All was going well until a mile from my place, the chain on my dad’s chain broke, and as he was arriving late on Saturday and leaving early on Sunday morning there was no time to fix it before we had to start our journey northwards.
The first step after lunch just outside Inverness was the beautiful Rogie Falls

This was a small stop, with a lovely little short walk to the beautiful and picturesque waterfalls, the first of many in this part of the world.
Now onto the first real stop of the NC500, one of reportedly the best roads in scotland: Bealach na Bà. The much prettier way to get to Applecross, a tiny remote village, with a delicious local brewery, where I ended up buying 6 beers.

A beautiful winding road, with amazing views, although as a fairly novice driver, it was a bit of a challenge, but we made it up in one piece with the car intact. Not prepared for the view, and onto the way home.
After Applecross we explored the Applecross Peninsula a bit more, driving across Applecross Sands, along the coast and driving some more spectacular, although rough B road onto our final destination.
Shieldaig
Our home for the next couple of days, the beautiful tiny village of Shieldaig on the borders of Loch Shieldaig and Loch Torridon.
Day 2 was one of the longest, as we explored all of Skye in a day. That’s another post, coming soon…
